- Renae Carlington [SOPHIA BUSH] was in love with Stefan Salvatore [PAUL WESLEY] and vice versa, after Stefan was already a vampire, and she died saving his life and the lives of an entire town.
- Renae was brought back as a Spirit (a vampire who dies for a nobel cause, becomes an angel and then falls from grace) and has a new chance at life, choosing to use it to get back in touch with her roots (which includes reuniting with her brother, Jay [CHAD MICHAEL MURRAY] who was turned by Damon), but ending up back in Stefans life, trying to keep him when Elena [NINA DOBREV] threatens to come between them.
- Aaliyah Grey [SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR] is a slayer who has been sent to take out the Salvatores, especially Damon Salvatore [IAN SOMERHALDER] because he killed her family and the three slayers before her.
- When Damons plans to ressurect Katherine take an unexpected turn and he learns WHY Aaliyah wants him dead, he begins to show her a side of him that she didnt know existed and soon realizes that he has fallen for the slayer fallen for the woman who has vowed to kill him and cant seem to see past that to her own feelings of fondness for the vampire that she has let get too close.
