To shed a little background on the record, One More Night is a nine-movement work largely about grief, but specifically inspired by the tragic Iowa plane crash that took the lives of the young popular musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, and their pilot Roger Peterson (immortalized in song as “The Day the Music Died”). It is framed by two expansive outer movements, and in addition to a movement dedicated to Peterson, consists of three movements serving as vignettes related to aspects of the artist’s personal lives paired with three movements that are reflections on a selected popular song from the corresponding artist.
“ Lil’ Bop” is the vignette movement for The Big Bopper. In addition to being a singer and performer, Richardson was also a well known DJ in his native Texas; he was also credited with introducing the world to the concept of the music video, and this alone is a big reason why I wished to make a video specifically for a Bopper inspired tune. “Lil Bop” is constructed to be an example of a two-minute radio hit that still fits within the contexts of a chamber music piece, and a modernized version of something Richardson would have spun was back in the 1950s - complete with some ad libs, trap beats, and an overarching viola solo. With the heaviness of the record dealing with large-scale grief and the fragility of our lives, it is meant to be a light-hearted break in realness, while also serving as a little homage to one of the major influences from the past that helps define our musical experience today. While One More Night is a chamber music album, this movement is a loop based work and written for one solo performer utilizing multiple instruments/voices.
