Lightning Talk: Trust Nothing, Complain About Something, Want Everything - Jonathan Stein - CppCon 2025

In performance-critical C++ development, assumptions, folklore, and “gut feelings” are everywhere—and they’re often wrong. I argue for radical skepticism: trust nothing unless it’s been measured, tested, and understood. Through a series of real-world examples—from misused benchmarking tools and meaningless performance claims to counterproductive compiler advice, misleading attributes, and even outright compiler bugs—I will show how easily misinformation creeps into everyday engineering decisions. The talk is a fast-paced reminder that everybody lies (sometimes unintentionally), compilers aren’t infallible, and performance myths can do real damage. The takeaway: complain more, demand evidence, and be unapologetically selfish about wanting correct tools, correct measurements, and correct explanations.
