Causal Inference for Code Writing AI - Matt K Robinson - CppCon 2025
---
Large Language Models (LLMs) are said to have the potential to displace millions of workers, particularly those in white-collar fields. Data from Anthropic’s Economic Index (2025) shows that over 36% of tasks completed with Claude are computer-code generation tasks. Software engineers seem to be a substantial number of LLM users. LLMs should prove to be a boon for the industry. But, a July '25 controlled trial found 20% net negative impact on SWEs. Oops.
I discuss proper causal experiments to answer questions like “Does fine tuning a code generation LLM on specific documentation improve the successful runtime execution of the generated code? Among others!
