Lightning looks like a sudden flash across the sky, but the visible strike is only the final part of a much larger electrical structure.

Many lightning flashes form as double-ended trees, with one side extending into positive charge and the other into negative charge. These two ends do not behave the same way. Positive and negative leaders can move differently, radiate differently, and produce different effects in the atmosphere.

In this episode, we look at the hidden filament network behind lightning and why polarity matters. We explore why negative flashes often arrive as multiple strokes, why positive flashes are more likely to produce continuing currents, why sprites are strongly associated with positive ground flashes, and why X-rays and gamma rays appear in specific phases of lightning activity.

The result is a more structured view of lightning: not just a discharge from A to B, but a branching electrical system shaped by charge separation, polarity, and the asymmetric behaviour of positive and negative ends.
