Light is a particle and an wave but guess what else is? A gas! Light follows the exact quantum probabilistic properties gasses follow. Gasses do not follow billiard ball kinematics they actually follow a probabilistic function and this is why typical explanations of how rockets work in space are actually false. Knowing light is a gas would allow us to study the aether; if we realize or use the hypothesis that light is a gas, then any discrepancies we see between how light functions could be possibly attributed to the aether's interaction with the light. You need something that can interact with a medium to study a medium. Light may be the thing we use to study/interact with the aether...and how we can "push on" space in order to travel in space.
