Every generation of women got told a confident, wrong thing about exercise, from the 1890s rest cure to the 1994 heart-rate cap in pregnancy. The current version, often associated with Stacey Sims, is “lift heavy or lose your bones.” We give the claim its due first: bone does respond to load, heavier produces a bigger response, and decades of “keep it light” advice left women weaker for no reason. Then we show where it breaks. The data does not support the idea that anything under 85% of your max is useless, or that there is one closing window you miss and you are done. Bone responds across a wide range, roughly 65 to 85% of your max a couple of days a week, and you are almost never locked out. We finish with why fall prevention, not just bone density, is the outcome that actually matters.
