Narendra Dabholkar, a qualified MBBS doctor who flitted between various action groups and stopped his medical practice, decided to take up the same programme across the state. In 1989, Dabholkar founded ANIS and began work earnestly. Headquartered in Satara, ANIS campaigned against superstitions, confronting dubious godmen and self-proclaimed holy men who promised 'miracle cures' for ailments.
