In this video, I take a look at Libido (1965), now released on Blu-ray by Radiance Films as Spine #159 in their growing catalogue of cult and world cinema titles.
Directed by a team of filmmakers including Ernesto Gastaldi, Libido is a fascinating proto-giallo that blends psychological thriller elements with gothic atmosphere and shifting perspectives. The film follows a young man returning to a family estate where memories of his father’s mysterious death begin to resurface — triggering paranoia, buried trauma, and a series of unsettling revelations.
While not a full giallo in the traditional sense, Libido contains many of the stylistic and thematic seeds that would later define the genre: voyeurism, unreliable perception, psychological obsession, and stylised tension.
