New Year’s Day 2026 in Robertsport, a coastal town in north-western Liberia, close to the border with Sierra Leone. The town lies on the Atlantic Ocean and is known for its fishing, beaches and small-scale trade.
The small market sells everyday goods, ranging from fruit and vegetables to clothing and household items.
Robertsport’s economy is closely linked to the sea. On the beach, fishermen return from the sea in wooden fishing boats. The way in which the boats are hauled ashore is striking. In a rhythmic, rotating motion, groups of men work closely together to move the heavy canoes across the sand. This technique requires strength, experience and good coordination.
Whilst the boats are being hauled ashore, nets are checked and catches sorted. For many families, fishing is an important source of income and food.
Further along the beach, young people are celebrating New Year’s Day. Groups of young people are swimming, playing football, dancing and listening to music. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal. On this day, the beach serves as a central meeting place for family and friends.
