Hassan Bah is well known in Guinea. He organises exceptional guided walks and we’ve heard lots of glowing stories about him. Hassan Bah has been running his special place with his family for years. It’s not cheap for a country like Guinea – €50 per person per day. For that, you get accommodation if you want it, all meals, and a choice of a whole range of guided walks. Hassan is a unique individual. He goes out of his way to ensure everyone has a good time. Having worked in various countries, he speaks good English and Spanish, as well as French and the local languages. Hassan uses his earnings to support the local community. For example, he has arranged for a water supply.
The place is in the Fouta Djallon Mountains. The Niger River has its source in this area. During our stay in the village we get a good impression of the daily life. People still cook over wood fires everywhere. Three times a day, a pan is placed over the wood fire. The wood is carried in large bundles on the heads of women. If there’s no well nearby, water is fetched from a stream and carried in a bucket balanced on the head. A great deal of care is taken to keep their own yards clean.
We see the entire process of making bricks. After the hollow bricks have been shaped using a sort of mould and dried in the sun, they have to be fired in a kiln. The kiln is made from the bricks themselves, by stacking them with gaps between them and placing firewood in the gaps.
We go on the ‘Indiana Jones walk’ with Hassan through a stunning landscape and past remarkable rock formations. We also go for a walk with Hassan through various villages to the local weekly market in Donghol-Touma. As we leave, we see the villagers, laden with goods, standing ready to set off for the market in minibuses. Vans bursting at the seams with market-goers and goods, and with even more passengers on the roof, are on their way.
Hassan knows everyone, so we can sometimes pop into places. We pass the blacksmith’s workshop. The blacksmith is making scythes over a small fire. One son operates the bellows, whilst another sharpens the scythes.
The market is a collection of rickety wooden stalls with corrugated iron roofs. Those without a stall lay out their wares on a cloth or walk around with their goods balanced on their heads. Most of the sellers are women. Bread and salt are sold from a wheelbarrow.
In the afternoon, we go for another walk with Hassan, to a cliff.
