FUTURE NOSTALGIA is the first pop album that I've gotten into since Random Access Memories in 2013. I'm not sure who's idea it was to get all of these funky bass lines on a pop record, but I'm very grateful.
This one is deceptively simple. It's mostly made up of octaves over just 3 chords, but the usage of ghost notes is what really funkifies this one. In the verses (0:09) I was really trying to keep the ghost notes quieter than I normally would to get that more processed pop sound. I don't think I did a particularly great job on that and I will definetly continue to explore. The lack of rhythmic density in the pre-choruses (0:28) really make the choruses (0:37) pop on this one.
A big reason I love this bass line is the subtle change around halfway into the tune (1:47). It's pretty obvious in this cover, but I really didn't notice it until I had gotten around 10 listens in.
Also, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DRAKE MARTIN HISTORY, I used a pedal in a cover (2:23)! Crazy stuff! The good ole' synth bass emulation by using an octave pedal and playing an octave up. VERY COOL!
Very proud of this fill towards the end. The first half is definetly better than the second. (3:09)
As I've heard D Mo say to many soon to be Berklee graduates:
"Your real studying is about to begin"
Definetly feeling that apply to this summer.
