continuing my sporadic look at classic, seminal, and otherwise interesting sonic rom hacks, we're playing ColinC10's Sonic VR! this rom hack turns Sonic 2 into a precision platformer, specifically the type like Super Meat Boy where each level focuses on a specific mechanic, obstacle, or theme.
Sonic VR is notable mainly for two things: its structure and its music.
as it consists of several small levels, Sonic VR does not follow the typical progression of Sonic games, allowing players to select what challenge they want to do from multiple lists of 10 levels. this setup makes Sonic VR one of the earlier Sonic rom hacks to be more of a major menu and game structure overhaul than a gameplay overhaul.
the hack's music is a selection of 4 songs by the band Anamanaguchi, compressed in order to fit on the rom and play through the Mega Drive's PCM sample channel. this was a major feat back in 2011, as the music takes up 6MB and Mega Drive roms typically capped at 4MB. the way ColinC10 executed this leads to occasional issues with the sound driver when playing sound effects, but it's impressive all the same.
