sonic story is a simple-in-concept, complex-in-execution mod of the original 2004 freeware release of cave story that replaces the game's main character with sonic the hedgehog, complete with momentum-based movement and terrain physics. additionally, the game's health and weapon level systems have been replaced with the traditional rings system from most sonic games, making enemies drop rings when defeated and sonic drop all the rings he's holding when he gets hurt.
harboring no interest in using guns, sonic's only method of attack for the entire game is jumping or rolling into enemies, making for a very different game experience despite no other aspects of cave story's design or structure being changed. this also results in many boss fights becoming more difficult in ways different from the original game.
