The Golden Age of Arcade Video Games was a period in the late 70s and early 80s where arcades reigned supreme. It was there that you could find the latest and greatest video games in their finest form, with people crowding around the most popular titles for their chance to feel it money in the hopes of getting to the top of the leaderboard. It is from this era that we got the oldest video game mascot - Pac-Man - and many other classics that have endured to this day.
Space Invaders, Galaxian, Asteroids, Missile Command, Centipede, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Gorf, Burger Time, Dig Dug, Joust, Q*Bert, Sinistar and Dragon's Lair are all hits from that era, as is the focus of this videos Qix.
Qix came out in the arcades in 1981 and is, by all accounts, a very simple game. You are tested with sectioning off areas of the play field while avoiding both the sparks moving across the edges of the areas you create and the Qix that erractively shfits about. You gain more points for larger areas and that is doubled if you draw your line in slow mode, but contact with the sparks or the Qix at any point while you're drawing a line costs you a life. It's a game where you have to be careful and quick in your actions all at once, all in an effort to rack up as a high a score as possible.
This Game Boy port was released in 1990 and does a fantastic job of bringing the gameplay of the arcade hit to the small screen. The Game Boy got a lot of great conversions that kept these classics alive in video game culture even as arcades began their in the mid 90s which they have yet to recover from (save in Japan and other parts of Asia where they continue to thrive.
Can I make it to the top of the scoreboard or will the Qix best me? Let's find out.
