Step back into the Old West at Castle Dome, Arizona—one of the Southwest’s best preserved ghost towns. We explore historic buildings, mining relics, and stunning desert scenery near Yuma to see why this hidden gem remains one of Arizona’s most memorable day trips.

Castle Dome, located about 40 miles northeast of Yuma, Arizona, began as a booming mining district in the 1860s after rich silver and lead deposits were discovered in the nearby mountains. At its peak, the area supported hundreds of miners, merchants, and freight operations, becoming one of Arizona Territory’s most productive mining regions. Though best known for silver, the district also produced large amounts of lead, zinc, copper, and gold over the decades.

Today, Castle Dome has been preserved as a historic ghost town destination where visitors can walk through restored buildings, view original mining equipment, and experience a rare glimpse of frontier life in the Sonoran Desert. The site also features exhibits, artifacts, and access to one of Arizona’s oldest mining stories, making it a popular day trip for travelers exploring the Yuma area.
