Winter is amazing at Letchworth State Park. It features frozen waterfalls, gigantic icicles, and the ice volcano. It's like walking through the frozen landscape Narnia or The North in Game of Thrones.
Letchworth State Park is one of the most scenically magnificent areas in the eastern U.S. The Genesee River roars through the gorge over three major waterfalls (Upper, Middle & Lower Falls) between cliffs--as high as 600 feet in some places--surrounded by lush forests. It is known as the “Grand Canyon of the East.”
Winter is a special time in Letchworth State Park. Although there are some road and trail closures (check parks.ny.gov/parks/letchworth before visiting), the landscape is transformed into frozen waterfalls, ice formation on the gorge wall, and the incredible ice volcano formed near the Glen Iris Inn.
The ice volcano is formed from the gravity fed fountain in front of the Glen Iris. The fountain is fed from the Trout pond located at a higher elevation. The fountain can shoot 50ft in the air. During long cold spells, the fountain will freeze into an ice volcano. The ice volcano is nearing its record height in this video.
In this video, take a tour through Letchworth State Park in Winter. We will take you past the Seh-ga-hun-da (The Vale of Three Falls) passing the Three Sisters (Upper, Middle and Lower Falls). Your tour will stop at all of the major overlooks including Inspiration Point, Archery Field, and Humphrey's Overlook.
