Believe it or not, Leprechaun Canyon is a beginner technical canyon. In fact, it was one of my first. Technically, it's not difficult. Geometrically, it's intimidating. The approach is beautiful. The upper part is fun. The end is so tight it will make you question what life choices brought you there. And the exit will make you glad they did.

Leprechaun Canyon has three upper sections that converge right before the really tight portion. So far, I've only done the left (west?) fork. The middle fork is supposedly even tighter than the section we went through.

Given that Troy is a big guy, I didn't want to risk the middle section. When you hear him talk about 'the fear in Jerry's eyes' in the video, it was actually concern if he could get through it. I'm sure I'll get a few comments from canyoneers saying how someone as big as Troy shouldn't go in there. Well....you're wrong because he made it. "I lived so I'm right" isn't the best argument, but we didn't just jump headlong into the canyon without taking this into consideration. I went first so I could gauge if the canyon was getting tighter. Right before it really slots up there is a section I'm confident we could have climbed out. So the plan was to back up and exit if we ran into a section he couldn't get through. Then there's the fact that Troy is a very experienced outdoorsman who (obviously) can take care of himself. So he knows his ability and how to stay out of trouble.

Anyway, enough of that. Leprechaun Canyon is amazing. One of my favorite adventures. I'm sure I'll be back.
