When you see one misleading story after the next in the "mainstream media", it's easy to dismiss legacy networks like PBS / NPR, CNN, MSNBC, Fox, CBS, and ABC as inherently biased and manipulative. But is the "new media" found on comedy shows like The Late Show or The Daily Show, TikTok or Instagram actually better?
Unfortunately... No.
Many people mistakenly believe that it's possible to easily separate fake news from legitimate information, but no matter what the platform or venue, there will always be activism and incompetence that will misinform gullible audiences.
That's why there's absolutely no substitute for developing your *own* critical thinking skills. Don't just take every claim at face value -- especially when it fits your personal biases too closely. It's important to apply the same kind of skepticism you'd apply to the mainstream media to any other form of news you consume.
Making sure you're accurately informed isn't a task you can pass off to the government or anyone else.
