In this lecture, we discuss the need for the second law of thermodynamics. Based on various examples such as a tank filled with fluid and stirred with a paddle wheel, a battery, and an open system, we show that even though certain processes that do not violate the first law of thermodynamics, they do not occur in reality. The second law is therefore required to describe the direction in which a process can occur. (c) Supreet Singh Bahga
