🤏🏼 Following the "path of least resistance” usually implies avoiding conflict — but when it comes to the smallest flycatcher in eastern North America, that phrase takes on a whole new meaning. This tiny bird is relentless — and anything but resistant to a fight!
🌳 Breeding in deciduous forests, males forego more elaborate displays and instead belt out their sharp “chebec!” song thousands of times an hour to attract females to their territories. And while they are famously territorial against birds twice their size, they often nest in close clusters, forming “hidden leks.”
With only about 64 days to find a mate and raise their young each year, these tiny birds live on a tight schedule. Even with their numbers in the millions, their populations are declining — making forest conservation vital. When it comes to this bird, being the “least” certainly doesn’t mean doing the least!
