Astor Piazzolla was an Argentinian composer famous for his tangos, in which he incorporated jazz and classical music forms. He was born in Argentina but spent much of his childhood in New York City, which is where he was exposed to jazz at an early age. He composed Le Grand Tango in 1982, which he dedicated to the late Russian cellist Mtislav Rostropovich, who premiered the piece in 1990 in New Orleans.
