Glinka was a Russian composer who is considered one of the founders of the Russian classical music romantic period. Glinka played both piano and viola. While it was written fairly early in his career (at age 20), Glinka considered his d minor viola sonata “the best of his pre Italian works”. He completed the first movement in 1824 and a second slow movement in 1828; however, he never finished the complete sonata so often only the first movement is played.
