ST. PETERSBURG, August 6. /TASS/. The head of a local Mormon religious community has been detained in Vyborg in a criminal case concerning the financing of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK, recognized as an extremist organization and banned in Russia). This was reported to TASS by law enforcement agencies.
Later, the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region confirmed the information about the detention of the 74-year-old suspect by police and FSB officers. According to operational footage released by the department, the defendant in the case is Valentin Gavrilov, the head of the local religious organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Vyborg. According to open-source data, he has been heading the local Mormon community since January 2022.
A case has been opened against the detainee under Article 282.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (financing extremist activity), the sanction for which carries a penalty of up to eight years in prison. The issue of filing charges against the defendant and choosing a measure of restraint is currently being decided.
As noted by a TASS source, law enforcement officers are thoroughly checking the suspect's activities for cooperation with representatives of foreign intelligence services. A mobile phone and the religious community's documentation were seized from the defendant.
