Hong Kong authorities have charged University of Hong Kong professor Gary Wong Ka-wai with allegedly accepting about HK$2.2 million (US$280,000) in bribes from businessman Huen Man-ho. In return, Wong allegedly helped steer seven IT-education contracts worth more than HK$10 million to Huen’s companies, receiving kickbacks of 10% to 50%.
Wong also allegedly helped arrange HKU jobs for Huen’s wife, nephew and five others. Wong, Huen, his wife and nephew also face fraud charges involving HK$120,000 in payments for research work authorities say was never performed.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
