In a clip from his podcast, Peter Attia analogizes LDL cholesterol to oxygen to illustrate the concept of necessary but not sufficient. Oxygen is necessary for a fire, but it isn’t sufficient to cause one. Likewise, LDL may be necessary for cardiovascular disease, but it isn’t sufficient on its own.
So here’s the question: does lowering oxygen more and more reduce the risk of a fire? Yes—but at what cost, and without addressing what else actually starts the fire?
