Welcome to the Lauterbrunnen Valley during Winter. Things are certainly much different here than during the summer season. While the Lauterbrunnen valley is praised as the Valley of 72 waterfalls, many of them are clearly visible during the summer months, in Winter however, most of the waterfalls will be frozen. The Swiss village of Lauterbrunnen looks magical when being covered in snow. A visit to Lauterbrunnen during such days is very much worth it. You can experience the village in a very different atmosphere: not many people will be around as during summer, the entire landscape and all roofs will be covered with snow and the Staubbachfall is frozen at its bottom. Winter is the perfect time to come to Lauterbrunnen to avoid mass tourism. Also head up to the Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe, to enjoy a stunning panorama up on 3500 meters above sea level. The Jungfraujoch offers you a spectacular view over the Aletsch Glacier and the Alps of Bern and Valais. The glacier cave called Ice Palace is an attraction that must be visited when coming up to the Jungfraujoch. In there, you will find many beautifully carved ice statues. The village of Mürren is for sure the most beautiful in the Lauterbrunnen valley. It is car-free and not so touristy. Mürren has many beautiful old houses, snow covered roads and beautiful views, especially to mount Eiger. In case if there is no snow down in Lauterbrunnen, the chances for having snow in Mürren is considerably higher. To maximize the chance for snow, going up to the Schilthorn or Jungfraujoch will be the safest choice. In Mürren, you also can try out sledding. Take the funicular up to Allmendhubel and try an easy and fun toboggan run. The sledding takes about 20-30 minutes for one round. The Schilthorn offers the best panorama. You can see the mountain trio of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the lakes of Thun and Brienz and many more summits. The Schilthorn is famous for being a major James Bond filming location for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Mr. 007 has spent a lot of time up on the Piz Gloria and even dined at the Schilthorn revolving restaurant.
