Built in 1939, the Laurel Fork Creek Bridge, located along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, was a 546’ long, 5-span, two-girder steel bridge with a cast-in-place concrete deck. The bridge was at the end of its lifecycle and a two-year bridge replacement project is underway.
On Wednesday, November 2, 2022, Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) of Phoenix, Maryland, USA (acting as Explosives Subcontractor to Main Demolition Contractor, D.H. Griffin Companies (DHG) of Asheville, North Carolina) performed the preparation for and successful explosives felling of steel girder Spans #1, #2, #4 and #5 on the Laurel Fork Creek Bridge. The remaining piers will be demolished conventionally by DHG.
