The Jackson Hole shed hunt opener is one of the most unique wildlife events in the West, part conservation measure, part cultural tradition, and part full-blown adrenaline rush.
Every winter, thousands of elk migrate onto the National Elk Refuge. As spring arrives and they push back into the surrounding mountains, they naturally shed their antlers, leaving behind what many call “brown gold.”
To protect wildlife during the harshest months, all shed hunting across western Wyoming is closed until May 1. At 6:00 AM sharp, it opens.
And in Jackson, it doesn’t ease in…
It starts with a motorcade.
Hunters line up hours before sunrise, staged and released in a controlled convoy toward public land access points. Position matters. Once the gates open, it turns into a full-on race into the hills.
First tracks, fresh eyes, and knowing the terrain can mean the difference between hiking miles for nothing, or walking out with a once-in-a-season find.
It’s competitive, it’s chaotic, and it’s deeply rooted in the culture of the West.
Good luck to everyone heading out in the morning!!
