Digitised sound cine film of the ‘Royal Sunset’, the last mainline run of British Railways 4-6-0 ‘King’ Class locomotive number 6000 ‘King George V’ originally built by the Great Western Railway in 1927. The locomotive was shipped to the United States in August 1927 to feature at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s centenary celebrations. During the celebrations it was presented with a bell and a plaque and these are still carried by the locomotive to this day.
The ‘Royal Sunset’ tour took place on 26th September 1987. It started at Swindon and proceeded to Gloucester via Stroud and thence to Newport in South Wales. From there it headed to Hereford and finished at Shrewsbury.
The locomotive is currently on display at Swindon’s ‘Steam’ museum. With two other King class locomotives preserved in running order it is highly unlikely that 6000 will ever steam again.
