Hello, and welcome back to a new video on my channel. For this week's train trip report, I am using an East Midlands Railway (EMR) HST 'Angel set', powered by two 125mph (200km/h) capable Class 43 diesel locomotives. This particular example is scheduled to be replaced on this route within a few days, so I had to take the opportunity to ride these trains before their expiry.
Today's route starts at the truly spectacular London St Pancras station, easily of the best in the country, continent, and even the world. From there we take the Midland Mainline northwards through Luton, and then on to Bedford, where the Class 700 commuter units terminate. As this train is a semi-fast service, it then continues to stop at Wellingborough, Kettering, and Market Harborough, then arriving into Leicester. This is a regional interchange for local destinations, as well as faster services to Birmingham, Cambridge, and Stansted Airport. On departure from Leicester, we can see some interesting locos in the sidings. The next stations is then Loughborough, home of Brush works. Next the train passes through but does not stop at the white elephant station of East Midlands Parkway, but stops at Beeston before finally terminating at Nottingham.
I really like these classic and comfy trains, they offer a fantastic ride. With replacement apparently scheduled for Friday 11th December 2020, there's little time remaining to take a ride on these classic HSTs. Thankfully some more HSTs will remain with EMR for a few more years, meaning the trains will still be experienced, but these special 'Angel set' formations with their extra comfy and spacious carriages will very soon be consigned to history.
