Major rescue operation is underway in southwest Xizang after a massive mudslide left several people dead or missing. The disaster happened on August 26 near Gyirong Port on the China-Nepal border, following days of heavy rain.
Although China faces harsh mountain terrain and a highly unstable glacial dam, the risk remains manageable as teams use radar and drones for 24-hour monitoring to protect downstream rescuers at Gyirong Port. To cross the raging river, rescuers used a heavy-duty drone to fly firefighters to the opposite bank and successfully set up a complex rope system to safely launch their inflatable boats. They also used heavy machinery to clear the landslide-hit highway to within 1.7 kilometers of the port, allowing large rescue vehicles to enter the disaster zone.
Elite land search and rescue teams from Sichuan began searching through the mud and rubble on foot, calling out for survivors.
Local authorities have quickly moved 500 residents to shelters and evacuated 555 tourists, while delivering emergency food, water and medical teams to the area.
