Please read the description for more info because I won't do any talking in this video. I am building just one rack of a custom size and recorded the process. I did not take into account the set-up time in this analysis, as it is difficult to estimate for doing just one product. The build took almost a full day of work, so that included time cleaning up the shop, setting up machines for cuts, cleaning up dust and paint brushes. The time I came up with for processing time was about 4 hours. I am trying to come up with an accurate way to estimate time so I can the extrapolate to make estimates on larger quantity production runs on something of similar size and style. The higher the quantity, the set-up time becomes lower. So therefore, I find it is more helpful to separate the set-up time from the rest of the building process. I also measure the materials I use and assign a waste factor based on past experience. For pine I buy at Home Depot which is S4S, I get a waste factor of about 25%. This factor depends on the size of the parts and quality of the wood. Smaller racks will have a lower waste factor. The Good Wood pine is local rough sawn 4/4 material. It is cheaper material but requires more machining and has a higher waste factor. I use it for the parts that plane to 7/8" thick. For this job, I under-estimated my materials cost at $80. The actual cost that was measured was $103. In conclusion, the building process turned out well but I think I could improve on the wood processing part and also the wire mesh processing. I'm still not used to working with that stuff. The selling price was $375, and it seemed to work out ok for everybody.
