Slovenian NSK band Laibach faced much controversy for their tongue-in-cheek parodies of militarist, totalitarian and nationalist themes, combining music styles of neo-classical and industrial.
Geburt Einer Nation (Birth of a Nation) is a German language cover of Queen’s popular hit One Vision. The lyrical content remains intact, but lead singer Milan Fras’ chanting vocals, mixed with clashing horns and a percussive military-stomp, subvert the original song and evoke its Nazi undertones that may or may not exist there already.
Despite being banned from performing in their native country (at the time, Socialist Yugoslavia), the band gained a cult status internationally - they were most notably an influence on German band Rammstein. When Slovenia gained independence in 1991, Laibach were reinstated as national cultural icons, performing and recording music there once again. They remain active to present day and even recorded the soundtrack to the film Iron Sky.
