Firefighters responded to the Southbound 5 Freeway in Granada Hills on May 8, 2024 where two big rigs collided.
LAFD sent 80 firefighters who took 38 minutes to confine and extinguish flames in one of two semi-trailers involved in this collision on the southbound 5 Freeway, just north of the 405 transition. One male driver successfully escaped his burning cab, but was still on fire. Thankfully, passing motorists stopped to help extinguish the flames on his clothes and body. Upon LAFD arrival, the adult male patient was transported by LAFD rescue ambulance to a local trauma center with critical burns. No other injuries or patients were reported, as the other semi-trailer was parked on the shoulder with no occupants at the time of the collision. Firefighting foam, fuel, and oil runoff were contained to the immediate area and then remediated, preventing any further threat to immediate surroundings or storm drains.
