Ahh, lots to say about this one. Firstly I am thrilled to have gotten to see one of these machines running route. I really never thought I would get the chance to any time soon. So I'll start with the most obvious thing, the arm. This ones arm is a bit of a hybrid between the more common Amrep and Pendpac. The system is chain operated in the same fashion as an Amrep, but the whole gripper assembly rides on external rails much like the Pendpac does. Very neat to watch, but the constant clanking is enough to drive even me insane. The clanking is caused by all the metal bearings you see on the chain slapping against the arm itself. I cant say that I have ever been truly annoyed by the normal functioning sounds of a truck before this day, but I really was. The other thing that I find very strange is the change in angle on the lower section of the arm. It makes a sudden change in direction, jolting the carts and spilling any overloaded carts. I understand why the bend is there, but perhaps a smoother curve would be better than a sudden change in direction? Other than that its not too bad of an arm. The cycle times were quicker than I had expected which was a pleasant surprise. And to my relief, this truck doesnt make that horrible screech when packing like the one Jared filmed did. Oh, and this one is on a nice new Peterbilt too. EVERYONE in Oregon is buying Peterbilt. Enough so to even make myself, a huge Peterbilt fan slightly annoyed. But its a good annoyed I guess :D Even Republic and WM had new Petes up there.
As always, thanks to the driver! Didnt take long for me to make friends with him by moving all the carts to one side of the road in those town homes ;)
