Labial’s Satellite Geysers (2025)
Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano in northwestern Wyoming, USA.
Labial’s Satellite Geysers consist of two vents in the northeastern Pink Cone Group of Yellowstone’s Lower Geyser Basin. Eruptions are uncommon and durations are usually 12 to 15 minutes, but range from ~9 to ~17 minutes. Eruptions commence with the eastern vent, which has low to moderate-sized splashing. As an eruption nears completion, the eastern vent’s activity gets lower and weaker. The western vent usually starts after and finishes before the eastern vent. Activity at the western vent is steam-rich with spitting spouts that can reach higher than the eastern vent’s splashing. Minor eruptions are brief (less than one minute) and involve light splashing, spouting, and spitting from the eastern vent. Preplay activity (blips and spits) from the western vent can occur.
