It’s May, and we’re talking about magnesium.
Have you heard of chlorophyll? It’s the pigment responsible for plants being green. But chlorophyll doesn’t just give colour, it also provides energy to the plant. It’s what we call a “photosynthetic pigment.”
The chlorophyll molecule has a shape that resembles the famous “rajola de flor,” with magnesium at the centre of a flat, symmetrical structure.
This nutrient is extremely important for plants.
When plants have problems producing chlorophyll, for example, due to a lack of magnesium, they suffer from chlorosis. Leaves turn yellowish and plants stop growing; they may even die if the issue isn’t resolved.
So how can we supply magnesium?
The best way is to add compost to the soil. Soil rich in organic matter retains available magnesium more effectively. It’s a balanced and sustainable long-term solution.
Wood ash also provides calcium, potassium, and a small amount of magnesium, but care must be taken not to alter the soil’s acidity too much.
Do you add compost to your garden? What about ash, do you use it?
At the Institut Català d'Investigació Química, magnesium is involved in studies that use organometallic compounds to build new molecules. These processes make it possible to form carbon–carbon bonds efficiently, a key step in the synthesis of medicines and other valuable compounds.
This is the fifth video in the series in collaboration with @LaTerrapeutica, exploring chemical elements and plants.
This video was produced with the support of the Department of Research and Universities of the Government of Catalonia, within the framework of the CERCA program grants for research centers to promote and encourage the use of the Catalan language in research (CERCA 2024). See you next month with a new element!
