La Force is the iridescent musical spirit of Ariel Engle. The Broken Social Scene member's debut album spotlights Engle's indelible voice and crystallizes a universe of godless devotional music entirely her own. Arisen from the ashes of AroarA, her collaborative project with husband and BSS bandmate Andrew Whiteman, La Force presents a "delicately wistful atmosphere" (Stereogum) that blends organic instrumentation with astral electronics and Engle's distinctive lyrics on giving life and suffering loss. "Lucky One," a song co-written by the couple, is here given a melancholic IDM rework by Whiteman's experimental music brainchild Apostle of Hustle. Originally about "having it all and knowing you can lose it at any time," the Apostle remix flips the track into a consonant dancefloor workout that deliberately builds to Engle's seductive vocals.
Of their collaboration, Apostle of Hustle's first release since 2007, Engle says "He works, I dance. Perfect synergy." Naturally, the video by directors Alison Vanderkruyk and Caely White captures this exact cause-and-effect. "This was my favourite visual collaboration," Engle says. "The video was done in an afternoon by my daughter's nanny and her best friend. It was all their concept, they dressed me, made me drinks, and we danced."
