As much as I love my pop-divas, I decided to choose an icon that gave me more room to be artistic, and create something minimalistic and meaningful.
Kusama is an 89-year old Japanese artist who works primarily with installations and sculptures. When she moved to New York, she established her reputation in the avant-garde and pop-art movement of the 60s. She's best known for her infinity-mirror rooms filled with polka dots as far as the eyes can see. They're an immersive experience that are inspired by her childhood hallucinations and panic attacks. One of them I personally wish I was there to witness was an infinity room filled with dot-covered phalluses. She would even paint dots on naked bodies. Ah to be born in the wrong generation!
The dots represented self-obliteration and neutering one's ego, which Kusama used to comment on US-Vietnam relations at the time.
"One day I was looking at the red flower patterns of the tablecloth on a table, and when I looked up I saw the same pattern covering the ceiling, the windows, and the walls, and finally all over the room, my body and the universe. I felt as if I had begun to self-obliterate, to revolve in the infinity of endless time and the absoluteness of space, and be reduced to nothingness." - Yayoi Kusama, 1954
