Citizens in Russia’s Kursk region are fleeing a reported incursion by Ukrainian forces.
Temporary accommodation has been set up to house those fleeing the area and locals are being encouraged to donate blood due to intense fighting.
Russian officials claim that at least 1,000 troops entered the border region earlier this week.
If true, it would be the largest assault on Russian territory since the beginning of the war.
Ukrainian officials have not commented officially on the incursion but Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia must ‘feel’ the consequences of its invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking off the record, sources close to the president claimed that Ukrainian forces have seized about 100 square kilometres of territory.
Footage shared online reportedly shows a Russian military convoy on fire in rural Kursk Oblast.
The nation’s defence ministry has also released video of what they say shows armoured vehicles being destroyed in the same region.
If the reported fighting continues, it could draw Russian reserves into the area, weakening their offensive operations on Ukrainian territory.
