This talk examined the "Kulturkampf," the German Empire's attempt to break the power of the Catholic Church in Germany during the 1870s. It discussed the legal machinery that the German state used in its campaign against the Church, the reasons why they attempted to do this, how the Church responded to the crisis, and its legacy for the Church today.

Darrick Taylor earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of Kansas, and teaches Humanities at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida. He produces a podcast, Controversies in Church History, and recently completed his first novel. He lives in Central Florida.
