One of the earliest air checks that exists of me, from May of 1970 on KUDL in Kansas City (licensed to Fairway, Kansas). My first time ever on the radio came about a year earlier on May 10, 1969 on sister station KCJC-FM, Kansas City's first "underground" rock station. I got my first shot on KUDL, the AM top 40 station in the same building, sometime that Fall. So I had no more than a few months under my belt as a "Boss Jock" on top 40 radio. And I would have been 17 years old at the time. Barely old enough to shave. And yes, I sucked on the air. Fortunately, I got better.
KUDL was the small upstart top 40 station in Kansas City going against giant heritage top 40 station WHB and had a significantly inferior signal, especially at night, compared to its cross-town rival.
