In 1990, Kraftwerk appeared live again after 9 years of absence from the live scene in Italy, playing four concerts in Bologna, Padova, Firenze and Genova during the second week of February, 1990. These gigs had been organized by Ian Floggs and featured Ralf Hütter, Karl Bartos, Florian Schneider, and a new percussionist who had taken over from Wolfgang Flür: Fritz Hilpert. Prior to their departure from Germany, the group spent their time rehearsing from 1st to 4th February in Köln. Fritz was responsible for organizing and loading the Synclavier library onto HDDs, needless to say he was responsible for Kraftwerk’s digital sounds. Also, all base tracks had been moved to ROM and some songs evolved around loops (such as “Computer Love” and others). The group boarded a bus to Bologna on February 5th and spent the next two days in Bologna preparing for their concert. Soon, journalists started to publish articles on the Italian newspapers about this concert. Many fans were sceptical, as no official tour had been announced. One of these fans was brave enough to phone the Tivoli to enquire about the legitimacy of the news adverts; Ralf picked up the phone and confirmed that it was all true.

The concert starts on the 7th of February and immediately “Numbers” and its drum beat are similar to the 1981 live version. Karl also used the new Atari SAM voice for his numbers.

“Computer World” starts as a separate song, much to the enthusiasm of the audience. This version is very different from all the other ones, as it is sung in German, but the Texas Instruments Language Translator voice was kept in English. This version features a very simple bassline and a digital organ lead sound.

“Tour de France” is a highlight of this concert, as it was being premiered for the first time. It’s similar to the 1991 version, minus the intro at the beginning. Ralf plays backing chords and Karl triggers the bass samples. The lead is automated.

“Computer Love” starts as a seemingly new song, with the typical arpeggios, with most of the sequences prototypes of the ones which will make it onto “The Mix”. The bassline starts, clearly tracing its roots to the synthpop tradition. Karl plays the melody and Ralf once again plays some baking chords. Towards the end they play the melody together.

“Home Computer” from 1990 is a very strange and disputed version. It has a dark atmosphere and has a lot of hard-hitting percussion, as well as the bass. The song is sung in English and German and also transitions into a section with a lot of effects. Needless to say, it gets a bit boring.

Special thanks to Aurelio Laloni for uploading the alt source and EW Music for writing the concert description (check out his channel!).

Uploaded in celebration of Fritz Hilpert's 66th birthday.

I used Aurelio Laloni's source as the main source and the source from The Return Of The Man Machine to fill the gaps. Both sources have a limited frequency range. The bootleg source has a slight less limited frequency range, but the kick drums don't sound smooth and the snare frequencies are oversaturated which is why I used Aurelio Laloni's source as the main source. Both sources are EQed individually track by track and I put a reverb on both sources to make the acoustics sound more natural.

The taper of the alt source complained about the women talking in the background. I don't think that this is a big deal because as a consequence for "ruining" the recording, their conversations are now on the Internet on the wall of shame.
