Many Koreans associate wine with luxury, a drink to be enjoyed at high-end restaurants or on special occasions. They also believe that the flavor of wine must be described in terms of body, acidity, tannins and other terms that are not native to the Korean palate. But Hong Mi-yeun, who became the first Korean to ever serve as judge at an international wine competition in 2010 and has been a regular jury member ever since, argues that wine should enjoyed casually like a beer or makgeolli, and that its flavor should be described in ways that are familiar to us.
In this week’s edition of the Globalists, we sit down with Ico L&B CEO and renowned wine taster Hong Mi-yeun to learn how to better appreciate wine in our own way and explore the potential that wine has in the Korean market and its ability to pair with local cuisine.
