Water Planet Aqualiss
Although it's worth noting that the new name for this planet in Ultra is a far more standard-sounding "Aquarius"... which makes me wonder what's up with that? THIS version's choice of name is definitely charting its own course... but how much of that is just willful deviation for the sake of deviation?
Anyway... this is... a very strange planet. Which is quite weird if you ask me, given its natural proximity to Popstar, suggesting that it's one of the earlier ones you're intended to visit, even though I definitely didn't contain or constrain my wanderlust well enough to play along.
About the only "reasonable" leap here is that... um... beach planet? Better bring your parasol! (Sure. that'll do.)
Immediately following that, we have a cannon. With no abilities on this rock OR the one that "logically" precedes it that can conjure up a flame. But don't worry, it's just a bonus room with an extra life! ...still feels like a weird gut punch for the player if you were just playing along.
I do rather like the underwater air bubble chamber stage layout, and it IS quite at home with the theme of the world.
But then the BIGGEST, room-engulfing of these is an air-island full of the Meta-Knights making a cameo as strangely garden-variety non-load-bearing enemies, our reasonable segue into the Sword Deluxe Copy Essence... guarded by... ... ... none other than... Jukid? Huh?
After that, all we've got is a really arbitrary current maze that houses... the Beam ability? Um...? At least it's a maze that gives you a surprisingly generous amount of lookahead from the peripheries of the paths and rest stops along the way.
Besides Beam, at lesat the gameplay-based commonality here is that you get two of the three underwater-capable abilities. Too bad Hammer's the best of the three. Parasol's cool, though. We can still hang out.

Theres no surprise and a mountain of evidence already entered into the record that I seem to take character creation VERY seriously. I think. Sort of. Its... complicated!
Whether properly accurate or effective in taking a personal inventory, Im one of THOSE people who likes to treat these situations as a chance for a blank slate to insert myself into a new, unfamiliar, and exciting situation. (counterpoint: the unbridled freedom to sin against nature offered by Street Fighter 6 shows that Im woefully lacking in my understanding of what makes a human being... um... human?)
But what if, instead, this isnt your average character creator engine? Sure, all the pieces and parts are there, and theres an incredibly exciting diversity in individual expression and a frankly jarring breadth of body types being made possible.
Possible.
Because you dont actually CONTROL any of it. Youre not so much creating a character as you are evaluating as many possible candidates for your player character as you care to see ferried into the interface for your perusal and approval. And... thats more or less it. Dont like them? Try again!
You CAN lock any slot that you feel might be compelling enough to keep around, but the option doesnt seem especially constructive, since you wont be able to do anything with or to them, just one less generation per roll of the dice.
I want to be very clear: this idea has merit. Its used quite effectively, in fact. To varying degrees in various contexts. And in the sole context of populating a piracy simulator and open seascape for the players to freely interact with, this is a mighty impressive feat of how to fill said world with actually amazing diversity in its people.
But, aside from bespoke NPCs designed exactly as intended and serving specific functions, the PEOPLE populating this world are. Yknow. People. Humans. Playing a game. An online game. Each one will be somone different. Someone unique. And quite likely someone uniquely nonrepresentative of themselves?
I actually really enjoy it in games that are significantly more roguish in persuasion. Getting brand new, uncontrollable generations of characters in the likes of Rogue Legacy or The Swindle and such is positively refreshing, whether or not the difference is really anything but cosmetic.
Im loath to use it as a proper counterpoint, but theres also a certain degree of this in my very early, formative evaluation of Fortnite. That is, bereft of any actual cosmetic items of their own, every new player will boot into the preeminent battle royale as a completely arbitrary... somebody. And each new game thereafter, theyll be someone else. It actually felt kinda impressive and practically self-aware that cramming a hundred people on an island and having them have at one another would by necessity run through a metric ton of personnel in an awful hurry, so populating them uniquely seemed like a nice fit.
Until you acquire a skin. Any skin. I thought at first that maybe it was a unique fashion statement that the random people-generator underpinning it all would suit up with in fair turn... but even the seemingly nondescript Twitch tie-in gal wearing otherwise normal clothes would come back time after time for more without variation.
Obviously where THAT diverges from my expectation is the fact THAT game lives and breathes on grotesque amounts of monetization of visual dissimilarities each available for an often exceedingly real price. And people do love their very pretty, very specific blank slates to project onto, so Im definitely in the wrong in my misaimed iota of admiration that quickly fell off a cliff when I realized.
In THIS game, it was succinctly summarized to me by a veteran player that if people could freely choose their character... wed be overrun by Jack Sparrow impersonators and the like. Oh well.
All it costs ME is about fifty minutes of rolling the dice and trying to separate form, function, and stylization against my already questionable sense of residual self-image. (...and a fleet of self-esteem crises just simmering on the back burner. Its actually cool! I swear!)

Okay, first and foremost, I had originally suspected that I needed to do MORE menial grinding at this game before I would be caught up to the end of (apparently) all content production for it.
However, it turned out that I had gotten within the last weekly item unlock ticket, I suppose... so there really wasnt anything else I needed to do with it... now I was free to play the game?!
Which was fine by me. It wasnt even my idea, it was Slurmys. We should play that thing!
I had thought likewise, honestly... and this was even BEFORE they announced there was an incoming content update for the game that nobody actually pays much attention to or remembers exists.
Now were totally ready for Basketball in... um... summer... ... ... is it not already summer?!
But thats not why youre here! ...y-youre not?! No way! I thought! ... ... ...okay, fine.
One of my live studio audience members is clearly a connoisseur of the finer things in life and couldnt help but point out that famous VTuber celebrity Fauna of Hololive was ALSO playing at the same time.
She had much more reasonable wants and needs. Green hair for her in-game character. So she needed the grind just as I did. Only her true desire was a matter of random selection, slowly closing in on the prize she had in mind. (The Nintendo Switch Sports online grind is real and still alive and well!)
... ... ...
So I did what any reasonable person would do, my audience definitely swayed by the allure of another.
I had to seek oshi out. I had to crush her. And my audiences dreams would be shattered and they would only be able to watch me.
Balance restored.
In actuality, it was the crazy advanced lanes that defeated her, which in her own words is the fun little equalizer, destroying those who are far more talented at regular bowling.
If we had played on standard lanes, I wouldve been eliminated in the first round instead, and she probably wouldve made it to the finals.
Anyway, it was fun.
... ... ...makes me contemplate the legitimacy and sustainability of a waifu hunter mode wherein I drop everything and try to abuse random matchmaking to find someone else who happens to have made the questionable life choice of playing the same underpopulated(?) game as me, just to see if the magic can be made to happen.

...y-yeah, it only took me about 90 minutes to make this happen, and it was the very LAST game she played before the end of her stream.

In all seriousness, I learned a fair bit about Fauna today, and I think shes neat, and she makes me feel encouraged to try setting up motion tracking again for games like these, because even while not perfect, the tech out there is deeply fascinating and grows more accessible by the day... and seeing someone in a perceived place of authority just kinda messing around with the same stuff and getting promising results.
Still janky, but thats technology and progress for you, and it makes me feel less self-conscious and like Im personally doing something wrong and being too discouraged to keep hammering away at it with the modest little gadgets at my disposal.
I just wont be doing it for hundreds of dollars on a corporate-sponsored vanity project designed to get consumers to buy in when the design isnt really refined enough to justify it... and theyre too cowardly to just go all-in on the R&D without someone ELSE footing the bill. (Sony. Oculus? Looking at you guys especially.)")
