Okay, first and foremost, I had originally suspected that I needed to do MORE menial grinding at this game before I would be "caught up" to the end of (apparently) all content production for it.
However, it turned out that I had gotten within the last weekly item unlock ticket, I suppose... so there really wasn't anything else I needed to do with it... now I was free to play the game?!
Which was fine by me. It wasn't even my idea, it was Slurmy's. "We should play that thing!"
I had thought likewise, honestly... and this was even BEFORE they announced there was an incoming content update for the game that nobody actually pays much attention to or remembers exists.
Now we're totally ready for Basketball in... um... "summer"... ... ... is it not already summer?!

But that's not why you're here! ...y-you're not?! No way! I thought! ... ... ...okay, fine.
One of my live studio audience members is clearly a connoisseur of the finer things in life and couldn't help but point out that famous VTuber celebrity Fauna of Hololive was ALSO playing at the same time.
She had much more reasonable wants and needs. Green hair for her in-game character. So she needed the grind just as I did. Only her true desire was a matter of random selection, slowly closing in on the prize she had in mind. (The Nintendo Switch Sports online grind is real and still alive and well!)
... ... ...
So I did what any "reasonable" person would do, my audience definitely swayed by the allure of another.
I had to seek oshi out. I had to crush her. And my audience's dreams would be shattered and they would only be able to watch me.
Balance restored.
In actuality, it was the crazy advanced lanes that defeated her, which in her own words is the "fun" little equalizer, destroying those who are far more talented at regular bowling.
If we had played on standard lanes, I would've been eliminated in the first round instead, and she probably would've made it to the finals.

Anyway, it was fun.
... ... ...makes me contemplate the legitimacy and sustainability of a "waifu hunter" mode wherein I drop everything and try to abuse random matchmaking to find someone else who happens to have made the questionable life choice of playing the same underpopulated(?) game as me, just to see if the magic can be made to happen.

...y-yeah, it only took me about 90 minutes to make this happen, and it was the very LAST game she played before the end of her stream.

In all seriousness, I learned a fair bit about Fauna today, and I think she's neat, and she makes me feel encouraged to try setting up motion tracking again for games like these, because even while not perfect, the tech out there is deeply fascinating and grows more accessible by the day... and seeing someone in a perceived place of "authority" just kinda messing around with the same stuff and getting promising results.
Still janky, but that's technology and progress for you, and it makes me feel less self-conscious and like I'm personally doing something wrong and being too discouraged to keep hammering away at it with the modest little gadgets at my disposal.
I just won't be doing it for hundreds of dollars on a corporate-sponsored vanity project designed to get consumers to buy in when the design isn't really refined enough to justify it... and they're too cowardly to just go all-in on the R&D without someone ELSE footing the bill. (Sony. Oculus? Looking at you guys especially.)

I think its pretty fun that the border is mocked up in the style of an old Donkey Kong arcade cabinet... although the details are a bit... strained... in order to fit within the limitations of the Super Nintendo video output with any degree of clarity.
Im going to be super up-front about this... ... ... I screwed up.
I was super gung-ho about capturing this monstrosity of double-vision (since when am I not? and do you think its a coincidence that multi-orientation DS gameplay videos so frequently stall out?!), because the Super Game Boy featues really make this game what it is... which naturally means that the border is... yknow... a significant artifact of the process of playing it.
So I rigged up a super... definitely-not-a-great-idea-by-any-sane-criterion capture method wherein I could get not only the full on-screen experience... but also the just-the-gameplay inner vision at play. A sort of hellish matryoshka nesting doll of video tomfoolery, if you will.
The PROBLEM is. When I did this. I was. very. WAY. too clever. about it. I guess. SOMEHOW.
...and as a result... I accidentlaly cropped out an entire row of pixels. Which, normally wouldnt be a total catastrophe... or whatever... but... ... ... well, the operative capture area is only 144 pixels tall. So the impact is quite a bit more pronounced than usual. A nearly 1% margin of error! Compared to ratios we deal in these days that are frequently a tenth of that!
(Really puts into different perspective the Vita cropping out 2 pixels from PSP native aspect ratio to be able to scale it up to the new screen resolution, huh?)

Where this creates an issue is that the main gameplay interface has a particular width in mind for its content... and ONE element of it juts out just a little higher than the rest, the stylized staggered SC lingers one pixel higher than everything else. I didnt notice... and literally everything else seems to be edge-safe enough to have escaped unscathed.
The whole playthrough is a wash! Cancel it! Do it all over again! Thatll only take another who-knows-how-long living on a shelf to get around to starting publication!
Anyway, all that notwithstanding, the original game is just a big ol bait-and-switch introduction to the basic elements of whats to come. Compatible with the not-so-basic elements that remain Marios expanded moveset, no less!
Being able to finish 25m or 50m in like three seconds is already worth the price of admission.
Big City
Surprise! This isnt an arcade style platformer! ...its a PUZZLE platformer!
What do you mean it doesnt feel much like a puzzle? Thats only because the game is still easing you into the flow of things with some cozy little micro-action management set pieces. But the very first, most crucial element necessary for making the entire game function... is the key. You need to find a key, grab it, and successfully take it to the door if you want to clear most stages from here on out.
The exception of course would appear to be every fourth stage, which is a Donkey Kong stage, wherein the big lug will attempt to thwart your efforts directly.
It is also here that we get our first glimpse behind the curtain. Of all the games Nintendo created for just one of its exceedingly numerous criminally neglected gadgets and peripherals, THIS would appear to be the poster child for the creative vision that was the Super Game Boy.
If youre not familiar with how it works on a technical level... thats not surprising! Its witchcraft, I tells ya!
Actually, put simply... it can colorize with independent palettes for each of the Game Boy sprite layers in oddly discrete square regions screenwide. Just not in actually realtime execution.
If that sounds nuts, both in sheer potential... and ALSO in bizarre limitation not especially suited to video gaming... both are right!
Of course, in a scant couple years, we would see the much more straightforward and less bizarrely cobbled together vision that was the Game Boy Color, so perhaps the lesson to be learned here isnt one of effort always paying off...
However, the Game Boy Color is backwards compatible with Game Boy games, not Super Game Boy games. Thatd require access to a Super Nintendos processing power...")

...but Ive been grappling with a bit of an awkward but pesky and intractible audio bug wherein after about three hours or so, the audio desynchronizes in an awful hurry. Its a bit of an annoying thing to fix in the trenches of video and audio datastreams, but I do my best in the meantime while hopefully Ill make significantly less work for myself with much higher confidence that some weird little moments dont slip through the cracks anyway.
