The rhythm section, piano (Freddie Mercury), bass (John Deacon) and drums (Roger Taylor), was recorded live at Rockfield Studios in Wales, with overdubs added later at Trident Studios in London.
At the time of the basic track sessions, Brian May was absent due to hepatitis, which he reportedly contracted after a pre-tour vaccination in Australia. For this reason, he did not participate in the initial live backing track and instead joined during the overdubbing phase once he had recovered, adding the intricate guitar layers that completed the arrangement.
In this analysis, we focus exclusively on the live backing track, analysing the interaction between the instruments, the details of the arrangement, the nuances of timing, and the foundation that allowed the complex vocal and guitar overdubs to be built upon.
