On 16 July 1968, following the I Will sessions, The Beatles recorded John Lennon's “Cry Baby Cry” after extensive rehearsals the previous day.

Take 10 was selected as the best performance and became the basis for the final recording. The basic track features John Lennon on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, Paul McCartney on bass, and Ringo Starr on drums.

Later overdubs included harmonium/accordion and pianos, another drum kit and percussion, a dirty and tense lead guitar, backing vocals/whistles, and the distinctive production touches—and sound effects—that give the song its dark atmosphere, reminiscent of a piece of Victorian nonsense poetry.
