#KilledByPolice - Remembering musical prodigy Herman Whitfield III: After calling for an ambulance to help her son deal with a mental crisis, six Indianapolis Police officers showed up & killed Herman Whitfield III by electrocuting & suffocating him to death face down for more than 5 minutes.
Two years ago in April, while experiencing a crisis, Herman III was naked, unarmed & not threatening anyone when, instead of medical personnel, police officers showed up to his mother's house. Officers tased, tackled, and double handcuffed Herman III before killing him.
IMPD Officers Steven Sanchez & Adam Ahmad have been charged with involuntary manslaughter. They are the first officers in Indianapolis to be charged for participating in a killing while on duty. The latest trial dates (which are subject to change) are listed as pre-trial on June 17 and jury trial starting on June 24.
None of the officers involved have faced disciplinary action by the IMPD. Herman's family is demanding for all six officers involved to be fired and charged with killing Herman III and violating the rights of his parents.

On the second night of the Democratic National Convention, Democratic Party delegates headed to the Salt Shed, a large riverfront concert venue in the West Town neighborhood, northeast of the Loop. A little after 11 p.m. a group of a couple dozen demonstrators weaved between outdoor garden venues and busy parking lots to march north and south along the Elston Ave. bike lane in front of the Salt Shed, calling for Palestinian rights with a large banner. The party was hosted by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and first lady M.K. Pritzker; John Legend performed there. Around 120 officers from the Illinois State Patrol and Chicago Police formed a perimeter around the demonstrators; our reporters did not see any arrests. Law enforcement blocked access to the west sidewalk on Elston Ave., however neither city nor state police would explain what justified closing the sidewalk.
Despite its modest size the noise demo made an impression on the thousands of Democratic Party delegates and officials that all had to pass in front of it to join and leave their festivities. Packed buses and vans proceeded slowly up the northbound lane, while after midnight as they drifted away and tried to catch vehicles, some looked on with concern, others snapped photos and videos.
One suit-jacked attendee unexpectedly crossed the street, walked through the police lines, and hugged a demonstrator with a megaphone. Our reporter asked why he’d done this as he headed back; his muddled answer indicated he probably wasn’t very sober, but his somber and concerned expression telegraphed that the message of the demo had reached him regardless. Since most of the delegates have been ensconced in high-security venues, luxury hotels and bars, it proved difficult for demonstrators to expose their message to them, but this event caught the delegates out in the open, as they all had to proceed through checks at a sluggish security entry gate under a boastful “Democrats Deliver” banner.

This summer, the polio virus was detected in the Gaza Strip for the first time in 25 years as a result of conditions caused by Israel’s ongoing assault on the territory’s 2.2 million residents.
The virus, which spreads quickly in unsanitary conditions like those imposed on Gaza’s population, was first seen in July. In August, an 11-month-old infant was partially paralyzed by the virus.
Public health agencies, including the United Nations Relief and Works Agency and the World Health Organization, responded with a wide-reaching vaccination effort.
During “humanitarian pauses” in bombardments, public health workers administered the vaccine to Gaza’s children in hopes of stemming the virus.
The first round of vaccinations saw nearly 560,000 children under 10-years-old receive the medicine in just under two weeks, according to the WHO.
The vaccine requires two doses to be effective. The WHO is negotiating with Israel for ceasefires in hopes of launching another vaccination push on October 14.

Denver, CO — On Wednesday morning, local unhoused advocacy group Housekeys Action Network Denver (HAND) presented their findings to the Denver City Council from surveys they conducted throughout January and February 2024 about winter shelter accessibility. The advocates also used “data from City shelter records, and experiences of advocates assisting houseless people.”
Unicorn Riot is covering a press conference about the report on Wednesday afternoon.
According to their report, Denver does not have enough shelter space for all houseless people seeking shelter in cold weather.
“HAND’s Cold Weather Shelter Access Survey results showing 66% of people being turned away from night shelters aligns with the City-acquired shelter data showing shelters being over-capacity nearly 67% of nights.”
